Founded in 1533, this iconic Caribbean port city stands as an architectural gem on the Colombian coast. Its remarkably preserved historic center, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site, attests to five centuries of colonial history. The imposing fortifications surrounding the old town recall its strategic role in the Spanish Empire, while its picturesque beaches and vibrant cultural life make it a top tourist destination.
The city thrives in the Bolívar department, on the Caribbean coast of Colombia. Bordered by the bay of Cartagena de Indias, it benefits from privileged maritime access via the Bocachica peninsula to the south and the Bocagrande peninsula to the north. Its unique territory extends over a group of low islands and rocky peninsulas, creating a coastal landscape of exceptional beauty between land and sea.
The urban atmosphere harmoniously blends historical heritage and Caribbean modernity. The historic center, protected by its centuries-old walls, pulses with the rhythm of cobblestone streets, colorful squares, and a vibrant nightlife. The bohemian neighborhood of Getsemaní cultivates a particular artistic spirit with its intimate cafes, contemporary art galleries, and street musicians who enliven tropical evenings.
The tropical climate ensures a permanent mildness with temperatures ranging from 25°C at night to 31°C during the day. Two distinct seasons rhythm the year: the dry season from December to April offers clear skies and reduced humidity, while the rainy season from May to November brings sporadic but intense showers, particularly abundant between September and November.
The dry season, from December to April, is the optimal time to discover the destination, with mild weather and rare rainfall. However, this period corresponds to the high tourist season, leading to increased crowds and higher prices. For a more serene stay, the months of February-March and July-August offer an excellent compromise between favorable weather conditions and moderate attendance.
The Rafael Núñez International Airport (CTG) serves the city from a strategic location about 5 kilometers northeast of the historic center. This airport platform welcomes national and international connections, facilitating arrival from multiple destinations. The journey to the heart of the city takes only about fifteen minutes by taxi from the terminal.
