The capital of Colombia since its founding in 1538, this dynamic metropolis of nearly 8 million inhabitants is the political, economic, and cultural heart of the country. Perched at an altitude of 2,640 meters on the Altiplano cundiboyacense, it is among the highest capitals in the world. Geographical situation

The city spans the Bogotá savannah, a vast plateau of the Eastern Cordillera of the Andes, covering an area of 1,775.98 km². Surrounded by impressive peaks, it offers a spectacular natural setting with the cerros de Monserrate and Guadalupe dominating the eastern part of the metropolitan area. This privileged location in the heart of Colombia makes it a natural convergence point for the entire country.

The subalpine oceanic climate is characterized by moderate and stable temperatures throughout the year, thanks to the high altitude. The average annual temperature hovers around 14°C, with notable temperature variations between day and night. Precipitation is distributed throughout the year, with two main rainy seasons occurring from April to May and from October to November.

Best season to visit

The dry seasons, from December to March and from June to September, offer the most favorable conditions for discovering the city. During these periods, the milder climate and reduced rainfall greatly facilitate outdoor activities and sightseeing. These months also coincide with many cultural festivals, allowing visitors an authentic immersion in the local cultural richness.

Access

El Dorado International Airport, located west of downtown, serves as the main gateway to the capital and the country's major air hub. Several options are available to reach the city center from the airport:

• Official taxi: Yellow taxis offer rides taking 30 minutes to an hour depending on traffic, costing between 20,000 and 30,000 Colombian pesos
• TransMilenio: The M89 bus serves the airport with a fare of 2,400 pesos, requiring prior purchase of a "Tu Llave" card (3,000 pesos)
