General presentation

Global presentation

A gateway to two wonders listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites, this destination in the tropical north of Queensland captivates with its privileged position between the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest. Founded in 1876, this coastal town has established itself as a true paradise for nature and adventure enthusiasts, offering a multitude of outdoor activities in an exceptional tropical setting. Its laid-back atmosphere and natural wealth make it an ideal base for exploring the treasures of tropical Queensland.

Geographical situation

Nestled on the northeast coast of Australia, the city borders the Coral Sea in a remarkable strategic position. Located about 1,700 km north of Brisbane and 2,400 km northwest of Sydney, it majestically stretches along the coast for approximately 52 km, from Aloomba in the south to Ellis Beach in the north. This exceptional location provides direct access to the marine and terrestrial wonders of tropical Queensland.

Atmosphere and character

The atmosphere here is characterized by a natural relaxation and a lifestyle focused on outdoor activities. This cosmopolitan destination forms a true melting pot of cultures, where a diverse population harmoniously blends with a rich history woven from encounters between Indigenous peoples, explorers, and migrants. This multicultural richness is expressed through colorful festivals, vibrant local markets, and a particularly dynamic artistic scene.

Climate

The tropical climate is divided into two distinct seasons:

  • Wet season (November to April): characterized by average temperatures ranging from 23.6 to 31.4 °C, accompanied by abundant rainfall, particularly intense in December and January
  • Dry season (May to October): a more temperate period with temperatures ranging from 17.5 to 26 °C and a significantly reduced humidity level

Best season to visit

The optimal period runs from May to October, during the dry season, when weather conditions are the mildest and rainfall is less frequent. This period also coincides with the dwarf minke whale watching season, a particularly remarkable spectacle in June and July.

Access

The international airport, located just 5.5 km from the city center, hosts domestic and international flights, greatly facilitating access to the destination. Once there, several transport options are available for visitors to reach the city center: car rental services, taxis, rideshares, and dedicated shuttles.

Internal transport

The city center, remarkably flat, is perfect for walking or biking. The Sunbus public transport network effectively serves the main urban areas as well as the surrounding beaches. For more flexibility, taxi and rideshare services complement the local transport offerings.
