Nicknamed "Philly" or "the city of brotherly love", this historic metropolis founded in 1682 occupies a central place in American history. Birthplace of the American Revolution, it is home to iconic sites such as Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell that testify to its founding role in the birth of the United States. Today, the city is renowned for its rich cultural scene, world-famous museums, and distinctive cuisine, including the famous "Philly cheesesteak".
Located in the state of Pennsylvania on the east coast of the United States, the city occupies a strategic position between New York and Washington D.C., about 160 km from each of these metropolises. It extends over a plain at an average altitude of around ten meters above sea level, bordered by the Delaware and Schuylkill rivers which provide it with advantageous maritime access.
The unique atmosphere of the city harmoniously blends historical heritage with contemporary urban energy. Its varied neighborhoods offer contrasting vibes, from the preserved colonial charm of Old City to the artistic vibrancy of Fishtown. The city also shines through its dynamic music scene and cultural festivals that punctuate the year.
The humid continental climate is characterized by four distinct seasons. Summers, from June to August, are warm and humid with average temperatures around 30 °C. Winters, from December to February, bring cold temperatures often dropping below 0 °C with occasional snowfall. Spring and autumn offer milder and more pleasant conditions.
The ideal periods stretch from spring (March to May) to autumn (September to November). These seasons combine pleasant weather and moderate tourist traffic, allowing for optimal city exploration. Summer attracts many visitors due to festivals and events, despite the heat and humidity. Winter, although more severe, offers seasonal festivities and more attractive hotel rates.
Philadelphia International Airport (PHL), located about 15 km southwest of downtown, is the main gateway with direct flights from Paris taking about 9 hours. 30th Street Station is a major railway hub served by Amtrak, effectively connecting the city to New York and Washington D.C. The I-95 and I-76 highways facilitate road access from other regions.
The compact downtown area is perfect for exploration on foot. The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) manages a comprehensive network including:
Bicycle-sharing services like Indego offer an eco-friendly alternative, while taxis, Uber, and Lyft ensure extensive coverage of the city.
