General presentation

Global presentation

The largest city in Canada and the capital of Ontario, this dynamic metropolis is home to over 3 million inhabitants, making it a true international crossroads. Recognized as a nerve center for business, finance, arts, and culture, it attracts millions of visitors each year who come to discover its iconic attractions such as the CN Tower, the Royal Ontario Museum, and the historic Distillery District. Its influence far exceeds Canadian borders, positioning the city as a must-visit destination in North America.

Geographical location

Strategically located in southern Ontario, the city spans the northwest shore of Lake Ontario, offering an exceptional lakeside setting. Its proximity to the American border places it only a few hours' drive from major metropolises like Buffalo and Detroit. The urban area unfolds over a coastal plain with relatively flat terrain, punctuated by a few hills that enhance the urban landscape.

Atmosphere and character

The cosmopolitan and multicultural atmosphere constitutes the true soul of this metropolis. Nearly half of the residents are foreign-born, representing over 200 distinct ethnic origins that make up a unique cultural mosaic. This exceptional diversity is concretely reflected in a multitude of neighborhoods with singular identities, a rich programming of cultural festivals, and a culinary scene of remarkable variety, showcasing this openness to the world.

Climate

The humid continental climate governs the four well-defined seasons of the region. Summers, from June to August, are characterized by humid heat with average temperatures around 25°C. Conversely, winters extend from December to February with average temperatures of -5°C and regular snowfall. Spring and autumn offer more temperate conditions, particularly pleasant for exploring the city.

Best season to visit

  • Ideal periods: spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November)
  • Advantages: mild temperatures and moderate tourist traffic
  • Summer alternative: numerous festivals and events, but higher attendance, especially in August

Access

Air connectivity is organized around two main airports:

  • Pearson International Airport (YYZ): located to the northwest, main international hub
  • Billy Bishop Airport (YTZ): situated on the islands, close to downtown

The city also benefits from excellent national and international rail connections via VIA Rail and Amtrak, as well as easy access through an extensive highway network.

Internal transport

  • Subway network: four subway lines
  • Surface transport: streetcars and buses
  • Payment: contactless Presto card recommended

Other options complement the mobility offering:
