Capital of the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi stands out for its unique balance between flamboyant modernity and ancestral traditions. Less vibrant than its famous neighbor Dubai, this Gulf metropolis cultivates a more peaceful and refined atmosphere. The city proudly upholds its centuries-old customs such as falconry, breeding purebred Arab horses, camel racing, and date palm cultivation, reflecting its rich Bedouin heritage.

Geographical situation

The city thrives on the coast of the Persian Gulf, in the north of the emirate of the same name. Its original territory extends over a natural island shaped like a "T", connected to the mainland by several bridges including the iconic Sheikh Zayed Bridge. Composed of an archipelago of 200 natural islands, the metropolis has also gained land from the sea through artificial islands. It is surrounded by the vastness of the Rub al-Khali desert, creating a striking contrast between modern urbanization and desert landscapes.

Atmosphere and character

Abu Dhabi exudes a harmonious atmosphere where contemporary sophistication blends with oriental serenity. Renowned for its calm ambiance and lush gardens, it offers a more relaxed and welcoming experience than other Gulf destinations. Its well-kept green spaces and famous Corniche contribute to creating a peaceful living environment, while its white sandy beaches and luxurious hotels attract travelers seeking refinement.

Climate

The subtropical arid climate ensures beautiful weather year-round. Two distinct seasons rhythm local life:

• Summer (May to September): high temperatures often exceeding 45°C, accompanied by significant humidity
• Winter (October to April): milder temperatures around 24-25°C, with occasional rainfall

Best season to visit

The optimal period extends from November to the end of April, when temperatures become pleasant and climate conditions are ideal for enjoying outdoor activities. These months offer the perfect balance between generous sunshine and bearable heat.

Access

Abu Dhabi International Airport serves as the main gateway, offering flight connections to numerous global destinations. The national airline Etihad Airways, based locally, provides regular services from major international capitals.

Internal transport

The urban transport network is progressively modernizing with about twenty bus lines serving various neighborhoods, the airport, and tourist sites like Yas Island. However, cars and taxis remain the preferred means of transport for residents and visitors. Taxis, affordable and ubiquitous, provide a practical solution for getting around this sprawling metropolis.
