Overview

Capital of the Sultanate of Oman, this historic port city offers a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity. Renowned for its distinctive architecture of white buildings and elegant minarets, it reflects a rich millennia-old cultural heritage. Visitors experience an authentic immersion in Omani culture through its bustling souks, historic forts, and majestic mosques that testify to its glorious commercial past.

Geographical situation

Strategically located on the northeast coast of Oman, the capital is bordered by the Gulf of Oman to the north and the majestic Al Hajar mountains to the south. This privileged location has made it a major commercial center since antiquity. The metropolis covers an area of approximately 3,500 km², encompassing developed urban areas and diverse natural landscapes that offer striking contrasts.

Atmosphere and character

The peaceful and welcoming atmosphere of the city is characterized by its legendary warm Omani hospitality. The harmony between traditional elements - colorful souks and centuries-old forts - and modern infrastructure like shopping centers and luxury hotels creates a unique urban identity. Regular cultural festivals, notably the annual Festival, enliven the streets and celebrate the richness of the local heritage.

Climate

The desert climate imposes high temperatures throughout the year. The hot season, from May to September, can see temperatures exceed 40°C, making outdoor activities difficult. The mild season, from October to April, offers more temperate conditions with temperatures ranging between 25°C and 30°C. Rainfall remains exceptional, with an annual average of only 100 mm.

Best time to visit

The optimal period extends from late October to early April, when temperatures become pleasant and conducive to outdoor exploration. This season also coincides with the calendar of festivals and cultural events, allowing travelers to experience a particularly enriching and authentic experience.

Access

The international airport, the main air hub of the country, is located about 40 km from the city center and provides direct connections to numerous international destinations. From the airport, regular bus services and taxis make it easy to reach the heart of the capital.

Internal transport

The public bus network, managed by the Mwasalat company, efficiently serves the main neighborhoods and tourist sites. Taxis, easily recognizable by their orange and white livery, are ubiquitous, although it is advisable to negotiate the fare before departure. For independent exploration of the city and its surroundings, car rental is a flexible and popular option.
