General presentation

Global presentation

Capital of Spain, this dynamic metropolis perfectly embodies the alliance between history, culture, and modernity. The city stands out as a true European artistic jewel, housing an exceptional concentration of world-renowned museums: the Prado, the Reina Sofía, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza form an unmissable cultural golden triangle. Beyond its artistic heritage, the city also shines through its football passion with two iconic clubs, Real Madrid and Atlético de Madrid, and its legendary festive heritage, a result of the famous "movida" of the 1980s.

Geographical situation

Strategically located in the heart of the Iberian Peninsula, the capital thrives on the plateau of the central Meseta, at an average altitude of 667 meters. The Manzanares River gently flows through this metropolis, while the majestic Sierra de Guadarrama rises about 60 kilometers to the north. This central position naturally makes it an essential crossroads of Spanish territory.

Atmosphere and character

The atmosphere here is that of a vibrant and cosmopolitan city, where centuries-old traditions and modernity coexist harmoniously. The festive spirit permeates every street, every square, revealed by the buzz of numerous bars, restaurants, and performance venues. The neighborhoods of Malasaña and Chueca pulse to the rhythm of a legendary nightlife, while Las Letras unveils a more bohemian and cultural side, reflecting the diversity of atmospheres that this capital holds.

Climate

The Mediterranean continental climate characterizes this destination, offering marked seasonal contrasts. Winters turn out to be cold and dry, with average temperatures hovering around 6°C in January. In contrast, summers unfold their generous heat, often exceeding 30°C. Rainfall remains rare throughout the year, with a slight peak observed in November.

Best season to visit

  • Spring (April to June): mild and pleasant temperatures, moderate tourist influx
  • Autumn (September to November): ideal weather conditions, less crowded city

These two seasons offer the opportunity for a more authentic discovery, while the urban parks, notably Retiro, are adorned with beautiful colors that enhance the visit experience.

Access

Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas International Airport, located 13 kilometers northeast of the city center, is one of the busiest airport platforms in Europe. The railway network revolves around two main train stations:

  • Atocha Station (south): serves the south and west of Spain, hosts high-speed trains (AVE) from Seville, Córdoba, Zaragoza, Toledo, and Barcelona
  • Chamartín Station (north): provides direct connections with France

Internal transport

The capital has a particularly developed and efficient public transport network:

  • Metro: 13 lines, 238 stations, one of the most extensive networks in the world (service from 6 am to 1:30 am)
  • Urban buses: daytime and nighttime services complement the metropolitan network
  • Cercanías: suburban trains connecting the center to the peripheral areas
  • BiciMAD: self-service bike system for short trips
