General presentation

Global presentation

The dynamic capital of Romania, Bucharest, charms with its harmonious blend of tradition and modernity. Nicknamed the "Little Paris of the Balkans," it owes this title to its eclectic architecture and cosmopolitan atmosphere that evokes the great European capitals. This vibrant metropolis offers an exceptional cultural palette, from prestigious museums to renowned theaters, not to mention a particularly lively nightlife that attracts both visitors and locals.

Geographical location

The city majestically extends over the Wallachian plain, in the southeast of the country, crossed by the peaceful waters of the Dâmbovița River. Its strategic position places it about 60 kilometers north of the majestic Danube and less than 100 kilometers from the Bulgarian border. This privileged location also offers a convenient proximity to the Southern Carpathians, allowing visitors easy access to the mountainous splendors of the region.

Atmosphere and character

Bucharest reveals a multifaceted personality that leaves no one indifferent. The city pulses to the rhythm of its many bars and clubs, creating a festive atmosphere that extends late into the night. Its cultural heritage is expressed through its fascinating museums and prestigious theaters, while its iconic monuments tell the tumultuous history of the capital. The urban architecture reflects this historical richness by harmoniously combining neoclassical and Art Nouveau styles with influences from the communist era.

Climate

The region is characterized by a continental climate, offering a marked contrast between harsh winters and warm summers. Precipitation, generally moderate, mainly concentrates during the spring and summer seasons, bringing welcome freshness to sunny days.

Best season to visit

Two periods stand out particularly for discovering the capital under optimal conditions:

  • Spring (April to June): mild temperatures and the blooming of parks create an enchanting setting
  • Autumn (September to October): the autumn mildness and lower tourist crowds allow for full enjoyment of cultural events and the urban atmosphere

Access

The capital benefits from excellent international connections thanks to its airport infrastructure:

  • Henri Coandă International Airport (OTP): located 17 kilometers north, it serves as the main gateway to the country
  • Aurel Vlaicu International Airport (BBU): located 7 kilometers north, it mainly hosts charter and private flights

The railway network converges at the North Station, a true transportation hub offering extensive connections both nationally and internationally.

Internal transport

Urban mobility is organized around a particularly developed public transport network:

  • Metro: four main lines (M1 to M4) efficiently traverse the city
  • Surface network: buses, trams, and trolleybuses managed by STB serve all neighborhoods
  • Taxis: abundant and economical service with transparent pricing
  • Car rental: numerous agencies located in the city center and at airports

These diverse options ensure smooth circulation throughout all neighborhoods of the capital.
