Lisbon is the capital and largest city of Portugal, as well as the seat of the Lisbon district and metropolitan area. Its inhabitants, called Lisboetas, thrive in a city rich in history and culture that enchants visitors from around the world with its unique and authentic atmosphere.

Geographical location

Positioned as the westernmost capital of continental Europe, the city spans an area of 100.05 km². It benefits from an exceptional location between the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the Tagus River to the east, both bodies of water connected by a strait into which the Tagus flows.

Atmosphere and character

The city is distinguished by its dynamism and cosmopolitanism, offering a warm atmosphere where traditions and modernity harmoniously blend. The historic districts reveal different facets:

  • Alfama and Bairro Alto charm with their picturesque streets and vibrant nightlife
  • Chiado fascinates with its elegant shops and historic cafes rich in history

Climate

The temperate Mediterranean climate ensures more than 280 days of sunshine per year. Winters remain mild with temperatures rarely dropping below 10°C, while summers are hot but pleasant due to the sea breeze that prevents stifling heat.

Best season to visit

  • Spring (March to May): ideal period with pleasant temperatures and moderate tourist crowds
  • Summer (June to August): popular season due to numerous festivals and urban activity, although prices and crowds are higher

Access

Humberto Delgado airport, the largest in Portugal, serves as the main gateway with over 31 million passengers in 2023. Located seven kilometers from the center in the northeast area, it is directly connected to the heart of the city by the red metro line.

Internal transportation

The well-developed public transport network includes:

  • The metro: one of the most interesting and beautiful in Europe for its decoration and contemporary art exhibitions. In operation since 1959, it currently has four lines, 46 stations, and 44.5 km of tracks
  • Buses for complete coverage of the territory
  • Iconic trams that are part of the city's charm
