Overall presentation

Capital of the Netherlands, this metropolis of nearly 930,000 inhabitants charms with its picturesque canal network and well-preserved historical architecture. Nicknamed the "Venice of the North", it houses world-renowned cultural institutions such as the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, and the Anne Frank House. Known for its tolerance and progressive spirit, the city attracts visitors from all over the world thanks to its unique atmosphere, famous coffee shops, and its iconic red light district.

Geographic situation

Located in the west of the Netherlands in the province of North Holland, the city is traversed by the Amstel River and connected to the North Sea by the North Sea Canal. Its remarkable canal network extends over more than 75 kilometers, shaping the urban identity and offering a unique aquatic landscape in Europe.

  • Spring (April-May) : ideal period with the spectacular blooming of tulips and pleasant temperatures
  • Summer (June-August) : long days and numerous festivals, but maximum tourist traffic
  • Autumn and winter : more intimate atmosphere, advantageous accommodation rates, and reduced attendance

Access

Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, located 11 kilometers from the city center, is one of the most important airport hubs in Europe. The city center is accessible from the airport by:

  • Train : 15-20 minutes
  • Bus or taxi : regular connections

The central station also forms a major railway hub, serving numerous national and European destinations.

Internal transport

The public transport network managed by GVB includes:

  • Trams, metros, buses, and ferries
  • OV-Chipkaart smart card for the entire network

Bicycling reigns supreme with more than 400 kilometers of dedicated cycling paths. The historical center is perfectly suited for exploration on foot, offering an immersive experience in urban history.
