Catania is a vibrant city located on the eastern coast of Sicily, at the foot of Mount Etna, the largest active volcano in Europe. Founded in 729 BC, this millennial city boasts a rich historical and cultural heritage, including a baroque city center inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Nicknamed the "Milan of the South" in the 1960s due to its economic dynamism, it is today an important industrial and commercial hub of the island.
The city thrives on the eastern coast of Sicily, on the Gulf of Catania, strategically positioned between Messina to the north and Syracuse to the south. Its center is located approximately 30 km from the summit of Mount Etna. The urban area extends harmoniously between the mountainous foothills of the volcano to the north and the Catania plain to the south, which is the largest agricultural plain in Sicily.
Catania exudes a lively and warm atmosphere that immediately captivates visitors. The city offers a particularly dynamic nightlife, marked by numerous bars, restaurants, and cultural events. Its historic center, with its picturesque alleys and vibrant squares, naturally invites leisurely strolls and the discovery of its architectural treasures.
The region enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate, characterized by very hot and dry summers where temperatures can exceed 30°C, especially under the influence of the sirocco. Winters are particularly mild, with average daytime temperatures ranging from 12 to 15°C. Precipitation is mainly concentrated between October and April.
The most favorable times to discover Catania are spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October), when the climate is pleasant and tourist crowds are more moderate. Summer also remains favorable for enjoying the surrounding beaches, despite high temperatures that can be intense.
The city center is easily explored on foot due to its compact layout. The city has an efficient urban bus network and a metro line connecting Nesima to Stesicoro, with extension projects currently under development. Taxis are available though less frequent, while bike rentals are gaining popularity among visitors wishing to explore the city in an eco-friendly manner.
