General presentation

Global presentation

Zakynthos, also known as Zante, is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea that enchants with its fine sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, and preserved nature. This favored destination for travelers seeking relaxation and cultural discoveries is home to iconic sites like the famous Navagio beach and its stranded shipwreck. The island harmoniously combines breathtaking natural landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and a variety of activities, offering an authentic experience to visitors.

Geographical situation

The island is located west of the Greek mainland and is the southernmost of the Ionian islands. With an area of 403 km², it stretches about 35 km long and 14 km wide. The territory features varied topography:

  • Mountainous regions in the north and west
  • Fertile plain in the center
  • East and south coasts particularly favored by tourists

Atmosphere and character

The island offers a contrasting atmosphere that satisfies all tastes. Peaceful beaches invite relaxation while some resorts offer dynamic entertainment. This duality is reflected in the habitat: traditional villages like Kiliomenos and Loucha retain their charming authenticity, while destinations like Laganas attract nightlife enthusiasts.

Climate

The Mediterranean climate characterizes the island with hot, sunny summers and mild but rainy winters. Summer temperatures can reach 35°C with occasional peaks at 40°C. Precipitation mainly occurs between October and March, while the period from May to September remains generally dry.

Best season to visit

The optimal period extends from May to October, when the weather is warm and tourist activities are in full swing. To avoid the crowds of the high season (July-August), it is recommended to favor the months of May, June, September, or October, which offer ideal conditions with fewer people.

Access

Two main options allow you to reach the island:

By air:

  • Dionysios Solomos International Airport (ZTH)
  • Direct flights from various European cities, especially during the tourist season

By sea:

  • Regular ferries from the port of Kyllini on the Greek mainland
  • Crossing of about an hour

Internal transport

Several means of transport facilitate travel on the island:

  • Car rental: Cars or scooters, ideal for exploring at your own pace
  • Public buses: KTEL network serving the main towns and beaches (schedules may be limited off-season)
  • Taxis: Available at the airport and in the main towns, a more costly option
  • Organized excursions: Offered from the resorts to discover major sites
