General presentation

Global presentation

The second largest city in Greece, Thessaloniki stands as a major cultural and historical crossroads of the country. This dynamic metropolis enchants with its clever blend of ancient traditions and modernity, offering visitors a rich experience where historical monuments, authentic gastronomy, and vibrant nightlife coexist. A university city par excellence, it shines with its exceptional heritage and unique cosmopolitan atmosphere.

Geographical situation

Located in Central Macedonia, in the north of Greece, the city thrives at the bottom of the Thermaic Gulf, a northwestern opening to the Aegean Sea. Situated about 500 kilometers north of Athens, it benefits from a remarkable natural setting, framed by the Chortiatis massif to the north and west. To the west lies a vast wetland forming the Axiós-Loudías-Aliákmonas National Park, adding a preserved natural dimension to this urban environment.

Ambiance and character

The vibrancy characterizes this city that never sleeps. Its picturesque markets, such as the famous Kapani market, are filled with local products and authentic culinary specialties. The waterfront serves as the beating heart of social life, lined with cafes and restaurants where locals and visitors gather for pleasant strolls. The exceptionally dynamic nightlife offers a multitude of bars, clubs, and taverns where sounds of Greek and international music confirm the festive reputation of this lively university city.

Climate

The Mediterranean climate with continental influences offers marked contrasts depending on the seasons. Summers, from June to August, are characterized by warm, dry temperatures often exceeding 30°C. Winters, from December to February, remain mild with temperatures rarely below zero, although occasional snowfall may punctuate this period. Spring and autumn offer pleasantly moderate temperatures ideal for urban exploration.

Best season to visit

The optimal periods extend from spring to early autumn. From April to June and September to October, temperatures pleasantly range between 20 and 30°C. These months have the advantage of reduced tourist crowds, allowing for a more serene discovery of the city and its heritage treasures under ideal climatic conditions.

Access

The access to the destination relies on several efficient means of transport:

  • Air: Thessaloniki-Makedonía International Airport, located about 15 km from the city center, offers national and international connections
  • Rail: A railway network directly connects the city to Athens and other Greek destinations
  • Maritime: The port, one of the busiest in the Aegean Sea, provides connections to various islands and Mediterranean destinations

Internal transport

Urban mobility is organized around several options:

  • Bus network: The Urban Transport Organization (OASTH) covers the entire metropolitan area
  • Metro: A line inaugurated in November 2024 services key points such as the university and the train station
  • Taxis: Easily accessible throughout the city
  • Bike lanes: Developed especially along the waterfront, they offer a pleasant alternative for getting around
