General presentation

Overall presentation

A true gem of the Cyclades, this Greek island, emblematic of the Aegean Sea, captivates with its unique blend of tradition and modernity. Renowned for its Cycladic architecture with whitewashed houses, its paradisiacal beaches, and its cosmopolitan atmosphere, it stands out as one of the most sought-after destinations in the Mediterranean, attracting thousands of visitors from around the world each year.

Geographical situation

The island rises in the Aegean Sea, about 150 kilometers southeast of Athens. It occupies a strategic position in the heart of the Cyclades archipelago, surrounded by Tinos to the north, Syros to the west, and Paros and Naxos to the south. This privileged location makes it an ideal starting point for exploring the other pearls of the archipelago.

Ambiance and character

Nicknamed "the Ibiza of Greece," the island has a reputation as a festive destination with its vibrant nightlife, renowned beach clubs, and lively parties that continue until dawn. However, beyond this festive image, it also reveals more authentic facets: preserved picturesque villages, fascinating historical sites, and secret coves allow visitors to savor moments of tranquility and discover the Greek cultural heritage.

Climate

The island's Mediterranean climate is characterized by hot, dry summers contrasting with mild, wet winters. Summer temperatures hover around 30°C, while in winter, they rarely drop below 10°C. The island also benefits from refreshing winds, particularly the famous summer meltemi, which brings a welcome breeze on the hottest days.

Best season to visit

The optimal period extends from May to October, offering different experiences depending on the chosen months:

  • Spring (May-June): pleasant temperatures and moderate crowds
  • Summer (July-August): the hottest and busiest season, but also the most crowded
  • Autumn (September-October): ideal conditions with still mild weather and fewer people

Access

The island is served by two main means of transportation:

By plane: The international airport (JMK), located 4 kilometers southeast of the main town, receives direct flights from many European cities, particularly during the summer season.

By boat: Regular ferries connect to the ports of Piraeus and Rafina from Athens, as well as with other islands in the Cyclades, allowing for a more picturesque approach to the island.

Internal transportation

The island offers several transportation options to suit all needs:

  • Bus network: efficient system with two main bus stations in Mykonos-Chora
  • South station (platia Fabrika): serves the south and southwest beaches
  • North station (near the old port): connections to northern destinations
  • Rental vehicles: cars, scooters, and quads available
  • Taxis: service available throughout the island
  • Kaïks: seasonal boat connections between certain beaches for an authentic experience
