Overall presentation

Capital of Greece, this metropolis perfectly embodies the meeting between ancient history and modernity. World-renowned for its iconic monuments such as the Acropolis and the Parthenon, it attracts archaeology and culture enthusiasts from around the globe. With a municipal population of about 645,000 inhabitants and an agglomeration that extends to nearly 3.6 million inhabitants, it constitutes the true economic and cultural heart of the country.

Geographical situation

Located in the south of Greece on the Attica peninsula, the city is majestically surrounded by mountains: Hymettus to the east, Pentelicus and Parnes to the north. This privileged position places it near the Saronic Gulf, in the Aegean Sea, and the port of Piraeus, one of the main global maritime ports, which reinforces its strategic importance in the Mediterranean region.

Atmosphere and character

The city exudes a unique atmosphere where the past and present intertwine harmoniously. Its lively neighborhoods, notably Plaka and Monastiraki, pulse to the rhythm of authentic taverns, traditional shops, and street musicians setting the tone. The nightlife proves particularly dynamic, offering a multitude of bars, restaurants, and cultural events that enliven the city all year round.

Climate

The region enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate, characterized by hot, dry summers where temperatures frequently exceed 30°C, contrasting with mild, wet winters. Spring and autumn offer particularly pleasant weather conditions, with sunny days and mild temperatures inviting exploration.

Best season to visit

The optimal periods extend from spring (mid-April to late June) to autumn (early September to mid-October). During these favored seasons, the climate remains mild, nature adorns itself in its finest attire, and tourist influx remains more moderate, thus allowing full enjoyment of archaeological sites without suffering the summer crowds.

Access

Elefthérios Vénizélos international airport, located about 35 km east of the capital, serves as the main air entry point. Several options are available to reach the city center:

  • Metro: Line 3 (blue) serves the airport and the city center in approximately 50 minutes
  • Taxi: Taxis are available at the airport with a regulated fare to the city center

Internal transport

The capital has a modern and efficient public transport network:

  • Metro: Three lines cover the city, operating from 5:30 AM to midnight (until 2 AM on weekends)
  • Tramway: Two lines connect the city center to the suburbs and the coastline
  • Bus and trolleybus: A vast network serves the entire city and its surroundings
  • Taxis: Numerous and relatively affordable, they constitute a practical option for urban travel
