Capital and largest city of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sarajevo is the major political, financial, social, and cultural center of the country. Nicknamed the "Jerusalem of Europe" due to its remarkable religious diversity, the city offers the unique sight of Catholic and Orthodox churches, synagogues, and mosques coexisting in the same neighborhood. Its tumultuous history makes it an emblematic place of the Balkans, notably marked by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914, an event that triggered World War I.

Geographical situation

The city thrives in the heart of Bosnia and Herzegovina, nestled in the Dinaric Alps. It stretches harmoniously along the Miljacka River, framed by wooded hills and dominated by majestic mountains such as Mount Trebević and Mount Igman. Perched at an average altitude of 500 meters above sea level, it enjoys an exceptional natural setting that gives it a particular charm.

The region is characterized by a moderate continental climate, with hot summers and well-defined cold winters. Summer temperatures average 19.1°C in July and 18.8°C in August, while January records an average of -0.5°C. Annual precipitation totals 932 mm, with a rainy peak in September that pleasantly refreshes the end of summer.

Best season to visit

The months of July and August are the ideal time to explore the city, with pleasant temperatures peaking around 30°C. Autumn also represents an excellent alternative, offering mild temperatures around 20°C and colorful landscapes that enhance the historical architecture and surrounding hills.

Access

The international airport is located about 9 kilometers from the city center, facilitating visitor arrival. Several options are available to reach the heart of the city:

  • Bus No. 36 for an economical link
  • Taxi with fares ranging from 25 to 30 convertible marks

Internal transport

A well-developed public transportation network serves the entire city:

  • Tram: a true urban symbol with six lines crossing the center
  • Trolleybus and bus: effectively complement the network
  • Tickets: available at kiosks or on board (slightly higher fare with the driver)
  • Official taxis: easily recognizable by their yellow color and sign on the roof, they are a reliable option for travel
