Global presentation

Panama City, the dynamic capital of Panama, fascinates with its striking contrast between modernity and history. This cosmopolitan metropolis reveals an impressive skyline dominated by tall skyscrapers, while its historic heart, Casco Viejo, bears witness to its rich colonial past. A UNESCO World Heritage site, this historic neighborhood with its cobbled streets offers a journey through time amid a city firmly oriented towards the future. The proximity of the legendary Panama Canal, an engineering feat connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, gives the capital a unique strategic dimension in the world.

Geographical situation

The capital flourishes on the Pacific coast of the Panamanian isthmus, at the eastern entrance of the Panama Canal. Positioned at approximately 8°58' north latitude and 79°32' west longitude, the city stretches over a hilly terrain dotted with characteristic hills. Cerro Ancón, the highest urban point, offers exceptional panoramas of the entire region and serves as a natural lookout to contemplate this ever-evolving metropolis.

Atmosphere and character

The atmosphere of Panama City oscillates between modern excitement and preserved colonial charm. The city pulsates with a cosmopolitan energy particularly palpable during February's Carnival, a time when the streets come alive with colorful parades and popular festivities. Casco Viejo exudes a unique romantic and historical ambiance, with its restored colonial buildings, shaded squares, and cobbled streets that harmoniously contrast with the contemporary architecture of the surrounding business districts.

Climate

The maritime tropical climate ensures pleasant temperatures year-round, ranging between 24°C and 32°C. Two distinct seasons rhythm the year:

  • Dry season (verano): from January to April, characterized by sunny days and more manageable humidity
  • Rainy season (invierno): from May to December, marked by frequent showers, generally in the afternoon, and a higher humidity level

Best season to visit

The ideal period extends from January to April, during the dry season, when the weather conditions particularly favor outdoor activities and urban exploration. However, the rainy season has its own attractions: lush landscapes, fresher atmosphere, and reduced tourist traffic, allowing for a more authentic experience of the Panamanian capital.

Access

Tocumen International Airport (PTY) serves as the main gateway, located 22 kilometers from downtown. This modern facility offers direct connections to numerous international destinations. From the airport, several options allow you to reach the heart of the capital: taxis, dedicated shuttles, or public transport, offering flexible access suitable for all budgets.

Internal transport

The capital has a modern and diverse transport network. The Panama Metro, inaugurated in 2014, greatly facilitates urban travel with its quick and air-conditioned connections. The network is complemented by modern urban buses and an ubiquitous taxi service. For the latter, it's advisable to negotiate the fare before departure. Transport apps like Uber provide a convenient and transparent alternative for getting around the metropolis.
