Formerly known as Bombay, this metropolis represents the economic capital and the most populous city of India. Renowned for its dynamism and cultural diversity, it occupies a central position in the Indian film industry, commonly referred to as "Bollywood". The city offers a fascinating blend of colonial architecture, modern skyscrapers, and traditional neighborhoods, perfectly reflecting its rich historical past and contemporary rapid development.

Geographical situation

Located on the west coast of India, the city extends over Salsette Island, bordering the Arabian Sea. It is strategically positioned at the mouth of the Ulhas River and covers an area of approximately 603 km². The territory is characterized by a varied coastline, including beaches, coves, and mangrove wetlands that enrich its coastal landscape.

This vibrant metropolis offers an environment where traditions and modernity coexist harmoniously. It radiates with its lively nightlife, colorful markets bursting with activity, and a thriving artistic scene. Climate

The tropical monsoon climate is characterized by three distinct seasons:

  • Winter (November to February): Pleasant temperatures ranging from 18°C to 30°C, accompanied by low humidity
  • Summer (March to May): Period of intense heat with temperatures reaching up to 35°C, marked by high humidity
  • Monsoon (June to September): Season of abundant rainfall, with risks of flooding and very high humidity

Best season to visit

The optimal period extends from November to February, during the winter season, when temperatures remain mild and precipitation is almost nonexistent. These favorable weather conditions are particularly conducive to outdoor activities and exploring the many tourist sites.

Access

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport serves as the main gateway, located approximately 30 kilometers north of downtown. The airport infrastructure includes two main terminals:

  • Terminal 1: dedicated to domestic flights
  • Terminal 2: reserved for international flights

Prepaid taxi services and car rentals are available to facilitate transfers to the city center.

Internal transport

The city has a diverse public transport network:

  • Local trains: Essential transport for daily commutes, although they can be extremely crowded, especially during peak hours
  • Metro: A line connecting the east and west sides of the city, providing a quick alternative to local trains
  • Buses: A network managed by Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST), covering the entire urban area despite frequent congestion
  • Taxis and rickshaws: Black and yellow taxis are ubiquitous in the city, while motorized rickshaws mainly operate in the suburban areas
