General presentation

Global presentation

Capital of India, Delhi is a fascinating metropolis where centuries-old history and vibrant modernity coexist harmoniously. This city with multiple faces is home to iconic monuments such as the Red Fort, Jama Masjid, and Qûtb Minâr, prestigious witnesses to its rich historical heritage. Beyond its exceptional architectural legacy, Delhi asserts itself as a major cultural and political center of the country, concentrating numerous museums, lively markets, and government institutions that shape the daily life of this dynamic megacity.

Geographical situation

Located in northern India, the capital is traversed by the Yamuna River, which outlines its natural contours. It is surrounded by the states of Haryana to the west and south, while Uttar Pradesh extends to the east. This strategic position places it about 200 kilometers south of Chandigarh and 250 kilometers northwest of Lucknow, making it a natural geographical crossroads.

Ambiance and character

Delhi reveals a multifaceted personality, brilliantly blending the authentic charm of its historic neighborhoods with the vibrancy of its modern areas. The cosmopolitan atmosphere that prevails in the city is fueled by a lively nightlife, cultural festivals that punctuate the year, and a remarkably rich culinary scene. This cultural diversity creates a unique atmosphere where age-old traditions and contemporary aspirations meet daily.

Climate

The humid subtropical climate that characterizes Delhi is marked by pronounced seasonal variations. Summers, extending from May to July, are particularly harsh with temperatures regularly climbing above 40°C. The monsoon period, from late June to September, brings abundant rainfall that temporarily cools the atmosphere. Winters, from November to February, offer a welcome respite with temperatures ranging between 8°C and 20°C.

Best season to visit

The ideal time to discover Delhi is from October to March, during the cool season when weather conditions become particularly favorable for tourism activities. This timeframe allows for comfortable exploration of the city and its treasures, although it is advisable to plan for warm clothing for January evenings which can be cooler.

Access

Indira Gandhi International Airport, located southwest of the city, serves as the main air gateway with its domestic and international connections. Delhi also stands out as a major railway hub of the Indian subcontinent, served by several main stations including New Delhi, Old Delhi, and Hazrat Nizamuddin, which ensure efficient connections throughout the national territory.

Internal transportation

The capital has a diverse and well-developed public transport network. The modern and efficient Delhi Metro serves a large part of the city and its suburbs with remarkable efficiency. Buses from the Delhi Transport Corporation complement this offer by covering the entire metropolis, despite often heavy ridership. For short trips, pedal or motorized rickshaws remain very popular, while traditional taxi services and transport apps like Ola and Uber provide practical alternatives for getting around according to one’s preferences.
