General presentation

Global presentation

Dynamic capital of Kenya, this metropolis of over 4 million inhabitants perfectly embodies African modernity. Founded in 1899 as a simple railway depot, it has transformed into a major economic and cultural center of East Africa. Its unique character lies in the harmonious coexistence of modern skyscrapers and vast green spaces, notably its national park located at the city's doorstep, offering the rare spectacle of observing African wildlife with the urban skyline in the background.

Geographical situation

Perched at an altitude of 1,661 meters, the city is located slightly south of the equator, in southern Kenya. This central position makes it a strategic crossroads in East Africa, at:

  • 480 km southeast of Kampala (Uganda)
  • 850 km south of Addis Ababa (Ethiopia)

This advantageous location makes it a natural hub for business and regional tourism.

Ambiance and character

Nicknamed the "Green City in the Sun," it exudes a vibrant cosmopolitan atmosphere. The rich cultural scene coexists with bustling markets and a lively nightlife. The atmosphere perfectly reflects the blend of authentic African traditions and modern influences, a testament to Kenya's ethnic and cultural diversity. This fusion creates a warm and welcoming ambiance that immediately captivates visitors.

Climate

The high altitude gives the city a pleasant temperate climate year-round. Temperatures range between 12°C and 24°C, with cool mornings and pleasantly warm days. The rainfall pattern is characterized by two rainy seasons:

  • Long rainy season: April to June
  • Short rainy season: November and December

The months from December to March offer the sunniest and warmest conditions.

Best time to visit

The optimal periods extend from January to February and from August to September, corresponding to the dry seasons. These months provide ideal weather conditions for:

  • Safaris and outdoor activities
  • Travel facilitated by the optimal state of the roads
  • Wildlife observation in the best conditions

Access

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) serves as the main gateway, located 15 kilometers from the city center. Direct flights from numerous major international cities, including Paris, allow travelers to reach the destination in about eight hours. From the airport, several transport options serve the city center: taxis, shuttles, and buses.

Internal transport

The city offers a diverse transportation network suited to all budgets:

  • Buses: Colorful vehicles serving the main arteries with defined routes and schedules
  • Matatus: Public minibuses of 9 to 13 seats, very popular, operating on demand without fixed stops
  • Taxis: Identifiable by their black color or yellow side stripe, fares to be negotiated before departure
  • Tuk-tuks: Economical motorized rickshaws, negotiable fares
  • Car rentals: Option for total independence, despite sometimes chaotic urban traffic
  • Walking: Possible in the city center, caution recommended for traffic and safety
