Practical information
Perched majestically on Montjuïc hill, the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys dominates the Barcelona skyline like a silent witness to the sporting and political history of Catalonia. This architectural monument, blending classical elegance with modern functionality, tells nearly a century of Spanish history all by itself.
Inaugurated in 1929 during the Barcelona International Exposition, this masterpiece designed by architect Pere Domènech i Roura was initially intended to host the 1936 People's Olympiad - a dream brutally interrupted by the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. The destiny of this stadium, however, was to take a spectacular turn when Barcelona was chosen to host the 1992 Olympic Games. A masterful renovation was then undertaken in 1989, carefully preserving its historic façade while completely modernizing its interior facilities.
