Practical information
Nestled in the vibrant heart of Rio de Janeiro, the Museu Nacional de Belas Artes (MNBA) stands as a majestic temple dedicated to Brazilian art. This cultural gem, whose impressive eclectic architecture is the work of Spanish architect Adolfo Morales de los Ríos in 1908, was recognized as a national heritage site in 1973, testifying to its invaluable importance in the country's cultural landscape.
Although the museum was officially inaugurated in 1938 by President Getúlio Vargas, its historical roots run deep into Brazil's colonial past. The fascinating history of this institution truly begins with the arrival of the Portuguese royal family in 1808, fleeing the Napoleonic invasions. In their trunks and chests, King John VI transported priceless artistic treasures – part of the Portuguese royal collection that would, against all odds, remain on Brazilian soil after his return to Europe and form the beating heart of what would later become the MNBA.
